Face mask skincare tips
It’s safe to say that our lives have changed a lot over the past couple of years. What was once witnessed only in movies like lockdowns, mandatory quarantine, isolation and mask-wearing is now part of our everyday lives.
Who would have thought we’d have to wear masks outside our homes particularly in the land down under? Not me! Probably not you either.
Whether we like it or not though face masks are now necessary not only are they awkward, uncomfortable, and hot here in Perth they’re not exactly a friend to our skin.
So how can you care for your skin while wearing a mask during this time of weird ways and uncertainty? Read on from your Maylands beauty and skincare expert at Beauty at Ab Fab.
Why aren’t face masks good for our skin?
According to dermatologists friction from the mask rubbing on your face and the heat of certain fabrics can cause irritant contact dermatitis. What’s more the build up of moisture from the air inside the mask can cause breakouts and even acne (or what some are now referring to ask maskne).
On top of all of this masks trap dirt, makeup, and all kinds of bacteria underneath making it even more unfriendly for your skin.
Let’s face it they don’t exactly make us look our best either.
Tips for caring for your mask covered skin
1. Avoid wearing makeup
Although this can be tricky when you’re planning on heading out on the town and removing your mask outside or while eating and drinking the less makeup you can wear under your mask the better.
So try embracing the ‘au naturale’ under your masks and only wear makeup when really necessary. Besides people won’t be seeing that area of your face most of the time anyway!
2. Choose a face mask with natural fabrics
Synthetic fabrics such as nylon and polyester are really irritating for the skin and the most likely to cause breakouts. Try choosing natural and breathable fabrics like cotton instead.
Silk face masks can also be a winner for your skin as they are cooling, cause less friction and tend to absorb much less moisture than cotton.
3. Stay hydrated
Naturally we all need to stay hydrated in summer particularly here in Australia. Now with face masks this is even more important.
Why? It’s a crucial component in preventing skin problems and keeping it healthy and glowing. Along with drinking plenty of water, you can try using the [ comfort zone ] Skin Regimen Recharging Mist for a quick hydrating and protective spritz throughout the day between mask-wearing.
4. Cleanse more than ever
Whilst you can’t avoid wearing a face mask in public right now you can avoid dirty skin.
It’s important to cleanse more than ever now to get rid of any dirt, bacteria and impurities that may have built up throughout the day. I recommend you cleanse your face deeply twice after mask-wearing even if you haven’t been wearing any makeup.
I hope this mask-wearing business can end for all, very soon but until then… I hope these tips help you take extra care of your skin.
