7 surprising facts about sheet masks
Sheet masks – are they for fun or do they really pack a powerful punch in boosting your skin’s dewy glow?
Read more from the team at your favourite Maylands beauty salon for 7 surprising facts you may not know about sheet masks.
1: Sheet masks date back to the Japanese Geishas
That’s right – Japanese Geishas, well-renowned for their poise and beauty were the first women to use face masks. Or so legend will have you believe.
How did they do it? By gathering scraps of silks leftover from kimono gown making. These silk scraps would then be soaked by the Geishas in flower water before being placed on their faces as their very own form of Geisha skincare.
2: You should cleanse before using a sheet mask
You simply wouldn’t put a sheet mask on a dirty face. So if you’re preparing your face for a face mask you should always cleanse your face first.
Why?
To rid your beautiful skin of all dirt and impurities
To fully allow your skin cells to soak in the vitamins and other good stuff found in your sheet mask.
Do so with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Then gently pat your face dry with a soft towel.
3: Sheet masks are soaked in serum
Have you ever wondered what the white or opaque liquid is dripping from a freshly opened, at-home face mask? Don’t worry – your sheet mask hasn’t gone bad. It’s just the serum that your sheet mask is soaked in.
What is serum?
A face serum is a lightweight skincare product that contains a higher concentration of active ingredient
Serum provides your skin with much-needed moisture and vitamins
Other essential nutrients may be present in serum such as hyaluronic acid.
If you ask your go-to Maylands beauty salon serum is truly where the sheet mask benefits come from.
4: There are so many ingredients in sheet masks
We’ve come a long way in terms of what ingredients are found in sheet masks. In fact you can find sheet masks with everything from aloe vera and green tea to activated charcoal, coffee and seaweed.
But be wary. Not all ingredients are helpful to your skin’s healthy glow.
Talk to your Maylands facial experts who will gladly help you find the right facials and sheet mask ingredients suitable for your skin type.
5: Hydration is a sheet masks strong point
Is your skin feeling dry, flaky and not adding to your confidence?
Arguably the best of the benefits of sheet masks is hydration. Giving the skin on your face an influx of welcomed moisture, you’ll look (and feel) healthier, glowing and more radiant than ever.
6: They’re not meant to dry on your face
You should always remove a sheet mask while it’s still moist. Why? Because letting a sheet mask dry out and crack on your skin can be damaging - 10-15 minutes on your face is a good rule of thumb to follow.
Contrary to what you might have heard you should not wash your face after removing a sheet mask. Any leftover serum should be massaged into your skin. Why remove all the beneficial serum straight away?
7: You can use sheet masks as much as you like
There’s no danger or downfall to using one every night if you want to. The only exception is usage on acne-prone and sensitive skin.
