How to freshen up your skincare routine for winter

Do you have a skincare routine that you use religiously day, night, rain, hail or shine?

Just like our wardrobes and for some our moods, how we take care of our skin changes from season to season.

Yes that’s right – the skincare products and routine you use and follow in gorgeously warm, sunny weather could use a bit of a shake-up for the cooler, dryer, winter months.

Steer clear of excessively hot showers and hand-washing

When it’s cold, windy and rainy there’s nothing more appealing than a long hot shower. Yet any dermatologist will tell you that your very hot shower can dry out the skin.

Our advice?

  • A 5-10 minute warm shower or bath will be kinder to your skin and prevent dry, itchy skin.

  • Avoid putting your face directly into the flow of water in the shower. If you notice your skin turning red after your shower or bath, it’s too hot and it’s time to re-think your bathing temperatures.

We recommend following the same advice when it comes to everyday handwashing. Some of us are more prone to red, scaly and itchy skin (common indicators of eczema). Eczema flare-ups can be triggered from yes you guessed it dry skin as a result of hot water and/or cool winter air.

Get yourself some gentle, fragrance-free cleansers

Say goodbye to the humble but hurtful bar of soap. Go on, it’s well overdue. Bars of soap can bring on skin dryness by stripping the skin’s natural oils and even disrupt your microbiome.

Seek out skin and body care with the following labels:

  • “Dye free”

  • “Fragrance free” and/or

  • “For sensitive skin.”

These body washes and other skincare products will likely contain better moisturising qualities such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, oats, oils and shea butter.

Your local Maylands skincare team stand by [comfort zone] products for seasonal skincare usage.

For winter we recommend the Remedy Cream to Oil face wash for a gentle cleanse and the Sacred Nature Nutrient Cream to restore and protect that comes with a 100% natural fragrance.

Moisturise more

When the weather becomes cool and dry it’s even more important to replenish all the good oils on your face and body. This winter stick to naturally-derived and scientifically formulated oils and creams in your winter skincare routine. Better yet, always apply a moisturiser on top of your toner. If it feels like your tried and tested toner is adding to your skin dryness then maybe it’s the wrong one for your skin right now. Time for a change.

We recommend on cold winter nights after a warm (not boiling) shower to use a richer moisturiser on not just your face, but your body as well.

Seek out the following ingredients in your moisturiser:

  • Squalene

  • Shea butter

These ingredients form a protective seal over your skin.

Another great moisturiser inclusion is hyaluronic acid as it’s unlikely to contribute to acne and allow your skin to breathe. The [comfort zone] Hydramemory mask is a must-have for instant hydration through the winter months.

Remember too that as we age our skin changes so it’s important that we update the skincare products we are using. Skincare is a habit for most but always make sure to consider if the products you use are the right products for your skin. When you use any product really think about how it feels. Does that cleanser leave you feeling dry and like you have to apply a moisturiser? If yes it’s not the right one for your skin right now. If a product feels good it usually is.

We hope these winter skincare tips help you freshen up your skincare routine for winter.

The seasonal skincare products you seek are proudly and readily stocked at your local Maylands beauty and skincare salon.
