Oily Skin? Why & how to manage yours

Do you suffer from oily skin? It’s likely that you see it as a bad thing and try to dry your skin out. But do you hear people with dry skin complaining about theirs and then trying to make it oiler? Oh yes, we always want what we can’t have.

What you may not realise, is that with breakouts or not, having oily skin is actually the better skin type to have.

We explained why oily skin is actually not a bad thing in our recent blog. Check it out here.

As promised, we’re now going to why oily skin occurs and how you can manage it.

What causes oily skin?

There are many causes to oily skin, but here are the main ones:

Internal Oily Skin Causes

The excessive production of the sebaceous glands (sebum) can be dependent on a genetic predisposition, constitutional factors or hormonal changes, in particular the male hormones.

It’s for this reason that adolescents, especially boys, are more subject to juvenile acne. The same applies to other pathologies linked to the secretion of hormones, such as the polycystic ovary syndrome in women, who have the tendency to develop oily, acneic skin.

External Oily Skin Causes

The use of some pharmaceutical drugs can stimulate excessive sebum secretion.

Oily skin can also be the consequence of using cosmetic products that are not suited to the specific skin condition, being too aggressive or even too rich. Cleansers that are incorrect would be the number one cause of upsetting the skins natural balance. Check our blog on cleansing to find out more.

In an indirect way, an unbalanced diet, with high intake of junk food, can also contribute to the onset of oily skin. Oily skin is usually predisposed to developing acne.

How does acne occur?

Oily skin is just one of the causes of acne.  In fact, there are four typical and sequential phases which lead to the onset of acne that can be identified:

  1. Sebaceous Secretion - The increase of the male hormone secretion is the primary cause of excessive sebum production.

  2. Inflammation – When free fatty acids, present in sebum, come into contact with the air, they oxidise, forming free radicals, which activate an inflammatory state and consequently irritation.

  3.  Hyperkeratosis – Inflammation then stimulates a defence mechanism, which induces the cells to multiply more intensively. This creates a thickening of the stratum corneum (at the level superior to the pilosebaceous follicle), which results in the pores becoming blocked.

  4.  Bacterial proliferation – The obstruction of the follicle creates an optimal condition for the proliferation of the Propionibacterium Acne bacteria, normally found in the follicular duct, but which proliferates intensively when there is the condition of excess sebum and absence of oxygen.
