Dry and Ageing Skin? You need to read this

Dry, paper-thin, wrinkled, sagging, flakey, lackluster. All words that can be used for older skin, but not words we like to hear or see on our faces.

Unfortunately, though, it’s all part of getting older. There are however, ways we can age “gracefully” and with the latest technology in skin care, it’s even easier to do so.

So, how do we do it? Today, you’re in luck, because I’m going to share with you some of the main causes of dry, ageing skin and what you can do to help slow down the process.

Water, proteins and lipids (or lack thereof)

Water, proteins and lipids are essential elements of the skin.

Like pillars of a building, they provide scaffolding for the face, making it compact, smooth and luminous. The passing of time progressively effects skin functionality and depletes it of these essential pillars.

This degeneration of the skin structure leads to a change in face shape, as well as more visible signs such as less defined face contours, sagging, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and luminosity (all those things we hate).

Life choices

Life choices such as excessive sun exposure, yo-yo dieting, unhealthy food choices, not enough water or extreme exercising can all speed-up the process, even in young skin.

Holy Hormones

Another factor to play a significant role in our skins’ health for women is our hormones. They are like messengers that send signals to cells ensuring their proper functioning.

At the skin level a deficiency in hormones can cause extreme dryness, loss of density and thinning skin as well as accelerating the typical signs of ageing such as wrinkles and sagging.

Catch ya Collagen

One of the major building blocks of the skin is collagen. It makes up 80% of our skin and provides our strength and elasticity.

From 25 years of age, our collagen production reduces at about 1% per year. From 35 years of age, the skin becomes even thinner, dehydrated and wrinkles begin to appear. From 45 years of age, we start to see hormonal influences of more thinning, lines and sagging and it just gets worse after that (great).

So, you’ve heard the bad news. What about the good news? How can we slow down the ageing and drying process of our skin?

We can start now - It’s never too late to start giving your skin a boost.

As we age, we need products that are going to stimulate cellular communication and redensify the skin. Along with this, there are few main areas we need to focus on.

Sun protection is still number 1

What is still and probably always will be number one is sun protection.

Sunscreen is absolutely a must! In fact, applying sunscreen as part of your daily morning routine is as essential to your health and skin care as is drinking water and eating a healthy balanced diet!

Sun care needs to be used every day of the year, not just when the sun is shining. Damaging UV rays penetrate through clouds even when you cannot see the sun. Extreme changes in weather and temperature such as stepping outside from a heated house into the cold, or being out in cold winds can all damage the sensitive nature of our skin.

So, don’t forget at least 10 minutes before you go out the door, apply a generous amount of sunscreen – no matter the weather!

The right preparation

The right preparation for your skin is extremely important and this comes down to cleansing and exfoliating.

You need to ensure your cleansers are correct and not drying your skin out.  When this occurs your moisturiser is forever playing catch up and not working effectively. Ensure you exfoliate regularly too.
