What’s the difference?

Water. There’s no denying it’s important. We need it to survive. Water is essential for many vital processes: it regulates body temperature, contributes to eliminating toxins and enables the digestion of nutrients.

In fact, water accounts for 70% of the body weight of an adult. It also makes up 75% of our muscles, 22% of our bones, and 85% of our brain. What’s more, we lose an average of 3 litres of water every single day. So, in order to keep the water balance in our bodies for our health, we need to restore the right amount of water back into our bodies.

 

Does your skin need water too?

What you may not realise, is that it’s extremely important for your skin’s health too.

Just like any other part of your body, your skin is made up of cells. And skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water. Without water, the organs will certainly not function properly or at their best.

If your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by turning your skin dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is therefore more prone to wrinkling.

 

Why is moisturising and hydrating important for your skin?

The skin has two ways of keeping hydrated;

  1. The outer layer creates a protective barrier

  2. Internally, we have the Natural Moisturising Factor, a film of non-lipidic substances that reduces water evaporation and helps keep the skin hydrated.

What you may not know, is that moisturising and hydrating is not actually the same thing. In fact, in a way, moisturise is the incorrect word. Why? Because by applying a moisturiser, we trap and seal the water in the skin’s surface and protect it, so it should really be called a ‘moisture protective’.

Hydration on the other hand, refers to the water content within the cells which leads them to swell and plump the skin. Without an effective moisturiser, the water can flow out of the cells and cause them to become dehydrated.

What happens to your skin when it’s dehydrated?

Dehydrated skin means it’s thirsty and really needs a drink!

Dehydration can be the result of genetic causes, as well as environmental factors, lifestyle and diet, the wrong skincare, or a combination of these.

How do you know when your skin is thirsty?

  • It looks dull and pale

  • It feels dry

  • It looks chapped and uneven

  • It feels more sensitive to external agents

  • It ages quickly

Proper hydration is essential to keep elasticity and healthy glowing skin.

What changes can I make to my lifestyle to help?

To increase the hydration in your body for your skin and overall health, here are some lifestyle tips:

  • Drink 2-3 litres of water a day - 80% through the water you drink and 20% through solid foods

  • Keep a bottle of water on your desk, in your car and in your bag

  • Make it a habit to drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up, before you reach for your tea or coffee

  • Drink regularly throughout the day to avoid getting thirsty (did you know that by the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated?)

  • When drinking alcohol, have at least one glass of water per alcoholic drink

  • Avoid drinking at meals, as it can water down your gastric juices and slow digestion

  • Remember that drinking water is not enough - Getting the right amount of protein and good fats rich in omega 3 (mackerel, salmon, sardines, chia, walnuts) is essential to having the correct hydrolipidic balance and retain water in your body
